Monday Minute: Not Popular

Everyone wants to be liked.  In this era of social media, everyone is striving to be “out there.”  We evaluate how many “friends” we have on Fcebook and use that to compare how more or less popular we are than others.  We see commercial after commercial promoting this gadget, that brand of vehicle, this type of look, that scent, that particular lifestyle that will make everyone suddenly like us more.  We are taught to step on and even use one another to get to the top.  We indirectly discover that hurting each other is the only way to make ourselves look and feel good, and gain the acceptance and love we crave.

But such behavior is inappropriate for any healthy society, and especially for those who profess to be followers of Christ.

As human beings, we all crave recognition and acceptance.  But the recognition we crave isn’t the one found on Facebook, or among our coworkers.  We were built in the image of God, with the purpose of loving and worshipping Him.  We are designed with a God-shaped spot in our hearts, and when we lack a relationship with Him, we feel that loss.  We become tempted to seek recognition and acceptance from other sources and fill that space with whatever we can find.  But it is never enough.  The more we seek, the more we long for what belongs there.  We really do look for love, relationship, acceptance, and worth in all the wrong places.

The only way to truly feel the love and acceptance we crave is to get it from God in the form of a fulfilling relationship with Jesus, because only He can fill that hole we were designed with.  Honor bestowed by God is so much greater than honor bestowed by people, and that’s what we are searching for!

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face.  The things of Earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His goodness and Grace.  Yeah, I’m quoting a hymn, but its so true.

If you feel you can’t seem to find the acceptance you are longing for, it might be time to look to Him for it… it might surprise you!

Your brother in Christ,

Jim
