For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 NIV
If I could only remember one verse from the entire Bible, this is the verse I would choose. In one sentence it tells of God’s great love for us, His sacrifice, and our salvation. Repentance, belief, eternal life. In one sentence.
Hallelujah. However….. why? I can understand that God loves the world. But how could he possibly love me? I don’t know about you, but I am a sinner. And something tells me you can relate. Why would God give His own son as a ransom for me? For you?
The answer is simple, but no less earth shattering because of it. So simple it’s often hard for us to believe.
God loves us. Unconditionally. He created us to be with Him. From the first, he told Israel: I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. Leviticus 26:12
He loves you. He loves me. And Jesus sacrificed everything to take our sins and save us from death. God longs for us. He created us to be with Him. Our sin gets in the way of this. A holy and perfect God can not be near people stained with sin. Therefore He sent his son to remove our guilt and call us back to Him.
Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name, you are mine. Isaiah 43:1b
God longs for us. It’s as simple as that.
